Walter Baker was born in Snailwell in 1885 (Newmarket Q1-1885 3B:572), baptised in Snailwell on 9th August 1885, the son of William and Mary Anne BAKER (née MENDHAM).


1891 census...Aged 6, he was in Snailwell with his father William BAKER [46] farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [46] born Tuddenham; brothers Charles [18] (farm labourer), John [12], Arthur [8] and William [2] and sister Eliza [11]. All except his mother were born in Snailwell.

1901 census...Aged 16, a gardener, he was in Snailwell with his parents and brother William.

In 1910 he married Willington born Maude MOSS [12-8-1882] (Newmarket Q3-1910 3B:1197).

1911 census...Aged 27. a stud groom, with his new bride Maude, he was living with her parents Frederick and Sarah Ann MOSS in Snailwell.



The pension card has Maud at Mill Lane, Fordham with their 2 daughters, Mildred (7-4-1911) and Edith May (12-4-1913)


He enlisted in Newmarket.
Abbeville was communications HQ for most of the war and base for three large hospitals. It was so far proved impossible of locate 22nd Veterinary Hospital , but Walter's grave being located in Abbeville is indicative of illness requiring hospitalisation at a base hospital, and his pension card gives the cause of death as "valvular disease of the heart commencing on active service.
